Microtremor monitoring technology recently begun widespread usage. It can be divided into two types: natural sources and man-made sources. Natural sources of microtremors arise primarily from wind, ocean waves, volcanic activity, tectonic activity, surface rock migration and are collected called geological noise. These are used in the early stages of building and structure seismic evaluation and design, foundation classification, and foundation improvement. After the 60's it also saw use in landslide monitoring and geothermal surveying. Man-made sources primarily arise from means of transportation, machinery, production, and artificial fracturing and blast mining. In recent years, this technology saw application in the fields of illegal mining surveillance, mined out area investigation, hydraulic fracturing, geothermal energy surveying, carbon dioxide sequestration monitoring, orebody water migration, and general environmental monitoring and microtremor monitoring.

Microtremors occur on fissures typically 1 - 10m in length. Strata mainland stress is anisotropically distributed, shear stress naturally aggregates in the seams. Under normal conditions these seams are stable. When production activities interfere with the original stress, stress accumulates around original or new seams in the rock, increasing strain energy. When external forces increase to a certain point, regions around pre-existing fissures undergo microscopic yielding or deforming and crack propagation to reduce stress. Part of the stored energy is released in the form of elastic waves (sound waves). Microtremor events triggered by hydraulic fracturing injection operations are highly complex both ***tially and temporally, but are not random processes, and can be ***ected within 1 km by suitably sensitive devices. Most microtremors occur in the frequency range of 50-1500 Hz, last less than 1 second, and rate -3 to +1 on the Richter scale.

The SE3NT Microtremor Monitoring System is specifically designed for the above-mentioned purpos
